Our musical director and creative dream team

Benefit from a wide range of choral music

Our musical dream team is Ian Akroyd as our musical director and Jenny Wattis. Both are absolutely lovely – and our biggest asset, beside us, of course 😉

Ian and Jenny take us through an astonishingly diverse range of choral music – across genres and eras, from arrangements of classical pieces to singer-songwriters and unique compositions, for example by our famous and talented bassist Mike (Searching for love) to Grace Jones and real dance music.

Both are also very active in other choirs and music initiatives. Jenny, for example, accompanies the British choir ‘Gay Abandon’ in Leeds. But let us Ian have his own say here:

‘Music is my passion, working with a diverse group of singers is a privilege and sharing music with others is a joy.’

I work with energy, commitment and enthusiasm to facilitate music-making that is enjoyable, inclusive, respectful, rewarding and fun!

My role is that of an enabler, helping singers to be the best that they can and to help them achieve things musically that they perhaps do not know they are capable of. Singing is an activity to which we bring every aspect of ourselves and singing as part of a group that is accepting and supportive becomes a powerful and affirmative shared experience.

I began studying Choral Music Direction in 2007, training with the organisation Sing for Pleasure. After completing their advanced course in 2010 I continued my training with the Association of British Choral Directors and the Royal Schools of Music, gaining an LRSM in Choral Direction in 2017. As well as leading the European Queer Choir I am Music Director of Gay Abandon and the chamber choir Cantabile, both based in Leeds in the UK. As a Choral Music Director my work includes arranging and composing music for choirs.

Networking in Europe and worldwide

We are open to new collaborations or special events that we would be happy to enrich musically and in performance with our respective programmes!
As a member of the European network LEGATO, the European Association of LGBTQ+ choirs, we take part in further training and exchange ideas.

LEGATO – European Association of LGBTQ+ choirs
EQC is a proud member of LEGATO / European Association of LGBTQ+ choirs.

Of course informally we keep in touch with many singers from LGTBQ+ choirs from all over Europe (and worldwide). That is why we love to be in such a unique chorus like the EQC 🫂.

Please learn, where and when we perform [ HERE ].
